Academic Advising

By regularly using advising services students will: 

  • Understand program requirements, educational policies and procedures and know where to find accurate, up-to-date information about them.
  • Demonstrate effective decision-making concerning their degree and career goals.
  • Gain the skills to develop a comprehensive plan for achieving their educational goals.
  • Be able to identify services and resources available at NHCC to assist them with success.
  • Independently access and use eServices and DARS and understand the information it provides relating to transfer and/or graduation.
  • Understand the connection between educational/career goals, program selection and course selection and will register for appropriate courses with their goals in mind.

Expect Your Advisor to:

Students Are Expected to:

  • Understand and effectively communicate important NHCC policies and procedures.
  • Provide a safe space to ask questions and express concerns.
  • Help you evaluate and define goals.
  • Support and encourage you as you gain the skills and knowledge to work toward meeting your educational goals.
  • Be available to answer questions through meetings, Drop In Advising, phone or email.
  • Demonstrate how to utilize technology.
  • Refer you to other on and off-campus services as appropriate.
  • Attend advising appointments on time; once per semester, or more often if needed.
  • Keep all of your information current in eServices.
  • Read NHCC email.
  • Become knowledgeable of NHCC policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Ask questions if you do not understand a topic.
  • Be responsible for your educational plans, decisions and for monitoring requirements for graduation.
  • Be willing to communicate with and consider advice from faculty, advisors, and other mentors.
